Datenschutzerklärung für Cardfox

Stand: 26. Oktober 2026

Privacy Policy for Cardfox

Last updated: October 26, 2026

This privacy policy applies to the app “Cardfox: Vocabulary Cards” for iPhone and iPad (the “App”). The App lets you create flashcards – also from photos, scans and PDFs – and learn them with spaced repetition. Your cards stay with you: there is no account, and your content isn't sent to me – except for the Pro AI features in section 8a, which you explicitly allow.

2. Your cards and decks

Decks, cards, images and your study history are stored on your device. If you turn on iCloud sync with Cardfox Pro, they're also stored in your private iCloud database at Apple so they stay the same on your devices. Only you can access it; I can't see this data. Apple's Privacy Policy applies.

3. Camera, photos and PDFs

When you scan a page, pick a photo or open a PDF, the App recognizes the text with Apple's text recognition (Vision) and turns it into cards – with Apple Intelligence where needed. This happens entirely on your device. Your images and texts are not sent anywhere for this and are not kept after the cards are created. The App only accesses the camera and photos when you start it yourself.

4. Microphone, speech recognition and reading aloud

During pronunciation practice, the App records through the microphone while you practise and compares what you said with the card. Speech recognition runs through Apple's speech framework on your device; recordings are neither stored nor transmitted. For some languages, iOS downloads a language pack from Apple once. Reading cards aloud uses the iOS voices on your device.

5. Reminders and widget

The daily reminder is a local notification the App schedules on your device. For the widget, the App stores a short summary (such as the number of due cards and your streak) on your device.

6. Free scans

To count the three free scans per week, the App stores the times of your scans in your device's Keychain. This information never leaves your device.

7. Advertising (Google AdMob)

Without Pro, the App is funded by labeled ads. It uses the Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. This may involve processing your IP address, device and system information (such as device model, iOS version, language), approximate location (derived from the IP address), interactions with ads and – only with your consent – your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). Your cards, photos and recordings are never transmitted for this.

Consent: Users in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google's consent platform (User Messaging Platform) before personalized ads are shown (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). Without consent, only non-personalized ads are shown. You can change your choice anytime in the App under Settings › Ad Privacy Choices.

App Tracking Transparency: The advertising identifier (IDFA) is only used if you allow it in Apple's prompt. You can withdraw this anytime in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security › Tracking.

Data may be transferred to countries outside the EU, in particular the United States. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. More information: policies.google.com/privacy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

With Cardfox Pro, no ads are shown and the ads SDK isn't started.

8. Purchases and subscriptions

Cardfox Pro is purchased and managed entirely through Apple's App Store. I don't receive any payment data or information that identifies you personally – the App only learns whether Pro is active.

8a. AI memory aids, word lists and example sentences (Cardfox Pro)

When you request an AI memory aid, a word list or example sentences as a Pro user and agree the first time, the App sends only what's needed to my server (a Cloudflare Worker run by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA): for memory aids and example sentences the cards' words and their translations, for word lists the language, level, topic and the words you already have in that language. It also sends the Apple-signed receipt of your subscription so the server can check that Pro is active. The server forwards the request to the API of OpenAI, L.L.C., 1455 3rd Street, San Francisco, CA 94158, USA, and returns the result to the App. I don't store the content; to limit requests, the server only keeps a counter per subscription and day, deleted after two days. OpenAI doesn't use API data to train its models and keeps it only briefly for abuse monitoring (at most 30 days, openai.com/enterprise-privacy). Data may be transferred to the USA. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) and providing your subscription (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Without Pro or without your consent, everything runs on your device.

9. No other data

Apart from sections 7 and 8a, the App uses no analytics or tracking services, creates no account with me and sends no data to me. Uninstalling the App deletes all data stored on your device; you can delete data in your iCloud in iOS Settings under Apple Account › iCloud.

10. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, and the right to withdraw any consent given at any time with effect for the future. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection authority. As I don't store any personal data myself, please also contact Google or Apple directly about data they process.

11. Children

The App is not directed at children under 13.

12. Changes

I update this privacy policy when the App or the law changes. The version published here applies.

13. Contact
